What is SQIBB?

While attending a workshop taught by the amazing Glyn Dewis at Photoshop World, a few of us learned how to produce studio quality portraits with an “invisible black backdrop” in any setting, indoor or outdoor. I coined the acronym “SQIBB” to describe and remember this technique that teaches you how to control your camera setting to eliminate the ambient (available) light and use a speedlight with a modifier or “snoot” to add light where you want it. Innovate as you try new techniques to achieve the “Studio Quality Invisible Black Backdrop.”

Instructions

Capture at least 3 good SQIBB and 1 image of your setup

1. Variety: All three images should be of different subjects: At least 1 portrait; At least one fine art

2. Camera Settings: Stop down available light and create a black exposure
(ISO 100; 1/250; F/? – depending on how much light. Outside: f/22;  Inside: 5.8 – 8)

3. Auxiliary lighting: Use speedlight with a modifier, such as a snoot to limit the light and direct it in a selective pattern. Go to Equipment Checkout to check out a speedlight (AA batteries), Trigger/Receiver (AAA batteries) and Rogue flashbender or grid. Work with a partner to hold your light.

4. Setup Image:  Be sure you use off-camera light for interesting shadows. With at least one image, also show your setup triangle (camera – light – subject) in full natural / ambient light to show the process, like this:

5. Instagram:

• Post at least one of your SQIBB images on Instagram. Use the #comm316 hashtag.
• Search the #comm316 hashtag and view 9+ classmates’ SQIBB posts  (Next week you will view images from the other half of class)
• Leave comments on at least three classmates Insta – Sqibb posts

Rubric

NOTE: Meeting the minimum requirements is “average” and constitutes an 80% or B- grade, according to the University Grading Guide. To receive a higher grade, students should excel.
